I can dominate hard level Su Doku puzzles, my average time is 7 30 minutes and my fastest times generally put me in the top fifteen percent. What methods are best for solving Evil puzzles, because i cannot seem to beat them in a timely fashion. __________________ Cliff |

solving evil? Besides doing the obvious, I've found I 'know' what the numbers are, eg within a square but not the order, and this impacts on the possibilities in a line or column. If you can hold the logic for enough steps (for the square & line & column) you will get to put in a right number somewhere else. |

I have always wondered about what you mean by methods. Is there really anything more than "excluding all but one" -method. It is all I use and in "a good state of mind" my average on evils is below 7 minutes (my best is 4:02 at the moment and I think this is not even close to what is possible). You just have to practice and practice and practice. You begin to see patterns, see the missing numbers faster etc I don't know if it is worth it, but I have always been a bit manic about the things I do... |

Download the word file you'll find under Sudoku solving methods in this forum, you can solve any puzzle, including evils, with it. As you work enough puzzles with these methods, you will learn to do more and more in your head, and get faster and faster. |

There are no shortcuts...
I propose that you just take an evil, try to solve it. If you can't solve it in 30 minutes, then take a break. Do a couple of hards and get back to the evil next day and give it another 30 minutes. If don't get anywhere, it is OK. Take a new evil. Repeat. Repeat. At some point you have a pile of unsolved evils, but there will be a day when you can beat them all and your pile starts to vanish. And then you are almost ready for the extremes....

I Googled "solving sudoku" and came across this site: http://www.paulspages.co.uk/sudoku/howtosolve/ It gave a lot of good tips, some I knew, some I didn't (like the triplets rule). I used to only pencil in if I could narrow it down to two numbers. Now I pencil in for three digits (looking for triplets) and it works! I used to give up on a lot of puzzles. Now my average time is about 10:00 minutes per evil puzzle. I still get stuck on some, but I think that is more my own impatience. Good luck! |
